This meal is hosted by Di Alba.
The other night I invited a bunch of people over, ordered a bunch of pizzas, and watched as they devoured their chewy, doughy, perfectly charred crusts. I sat with my own gluten-free version, which was lifeless and flat. Like cardboard, with toppings. It was sad.
But there is hope! It’s not pizza, but I found a gluten-free focaccia that is as good as the real thing. It’s at Di Alba in Downtown Los Angeles, which is related to The Smile in NYC, but has a completely different look, feel, and concept. You can get focaccia by the slice (regular ones too) with toppings from burrata and tomato sauce to a breakfast option with smoked salmon and hard-boiled egg. I opted for one with brussels sprouts, red onion, and mint – along with some ready-made salads. Thick, crusty, and satisfying.
Salt and Straw DTLA is right next door, but if you’re gluten-free, do not miss this cookie. It’s absolute magic.
