Commissary at the Line Hotel

I make it no secret that I adore Chef Roy Choi.  Pumped to finally check out his new restaurant, Commissary at the Line Hotel, upstairs from Pot Cafe.  It is on the 2nd floor, by the hotel pool.

Just like at A Frame, the plates are mismatched.  It reminds me of my own dinner parties, where we serve things out of random containers…

…both thrilled and horrified that this $13 White Fir cocktail comes in a plastic deli container.

The Chef’s sense of humor is appreciated.

You can’t really make requests; you have to just trust that they know what they’re doing.  Our friend Sam Smith doesn’t like cilantro, so our server makes a note of that.

It is really fun just calling out random items and seeing what arrives.

“Bok choy!”

For those of you who have seen the film Chef, with Jon Favreau, you will appreciate this grilled cheese.  Roy teaches him how to make it in the end credits – this is the same one!

Other mains include a schnitzel and scallops, a side of fries…

…and a pretty traditional Cobb.

Reviews for this place are mixed. I admit that some of the dishes (like the salad, above and the dessert – Meringue with Rhubarb and Lemon Anglaise – below) are just okay.

But the veggie dishes are truly phenomenal, as are the ambiance and service.  I love that our waiter, Steve, brings out a packet of Coriander (Cilantro) Seeds for Sam to take home.

I would have been a bit apprehensive without descriptions too – looks good though! I’d be scared everything would have been chock full of onions – ha! 😀
