Carvery Kitchen

lunch - restaurant - salads - sandwich

“Ocean Park Boulevard” in Santa Monica = commercial auditions.  For me, there’s really no reason to hang around that street before/afterwards, but now there might be!

DSCN5443

Carvery Kitchen recently opened, and invited me in to try out the menu.  It kinda reminds me of Lemonade/Tender Greens

DSCN5447

…with my favorite soda machine!

DSCN5495

Roman, the owner, invited me in to try out their menu.  I brought Sam and John “for support.”

DSCN5462

Many, many sandwiches.  They’ve got several dip options, like the roast beef (above) and panini style too.

DSCN5468

This is the Puebla BBQ Brisket – everything in the world crammed inside from Balsamic Onion Jam to Pickled Jalapeño.

DSCN5470

Also pressed – the Chicken Caprese.

DSCN5479

All of their meat is slow-cooked and very flavorful – but there are plenty of vegetarian options as well.

DSCN5483

The L.A. Vegan Club (above) which gets its texture from falafel and potato, and the Grilled Veggie Cheesetta (below) – it includes flax seeds and a side of Tahini Basil sauce.

DSCN5489

You can also order vegan side dishes…

DSCN5455

…including brussels sprouts…

DSCN5491

…and roasted veggies…

DSCN5493

…or big entree salads – this one, obviously had meat on it.

DSCN5473

The Farmer’s Chop features Pastrami Bits – my kinda dish!

Next time I find myself on Ocean Park Blvd. for a late afternoon appointment, I’ll stick around and wait out the traffic here.

Union in Pasadena

lunch - restaurant - salads - sandwich

UPDATE: Union is no longer serving lunch

Down the street from one of my favorite galleries in Old Pasadena, lies a 50-seat restaurant called Union.

IMG_4383

They recently launched their lunch menu

IMG_4385

…which you can take to go…

IMG_4411

IMG_4394

…but once I saw their adorable space, I decided to stay/eat at the bar.

IMG_4408

IMG_4415

Elizabeth was my date – we nibbled on some sandwiches…

IMG_4423

…Porchetta, house made giardiniera, greens, saba + Olive Oil poached tuna, pickled fennel, rosemary-caper aioli.

IMG_4427

They were actually butchering a pig in the kitchen while we ate, a la the opening scene of Chef. But no worries, vegetarians, there’s stuff for you too. It’s seasonal, though, so you may not always see these beets…

IMG_4417

…or cucumbers.

IMG_4399

Hazelnut chocolate pudding and biscotti for dessert!

IMG_4432

IMG_4433

I drank a Diet Boylan’s

IMG_4418

…and a sip of their lemonade with basil and chilies – refreshing, with a light kick.

IMG_4436

Such a charming place – I want to come back for dinner service and meet the Head Chef, Bruce Kalman – who’s from the same part of NJ as me!

(Garden Staters – DID YOU KNOW THEY JUST REOPENED ACTION PARK THIS WEEKEND?!?)

Din Tai Fung Glendale

lunch - restaurant

You may remember my love for Din Tai Fung

DSCN3783

…now, I no longer have to drive all the way to the SGV for my dumpling fix!

IMG_4267

Situated on the outskirts of Americana at Brand, the Glendale space is a bit more posh for its mall clientele…

DSCN3785

…but you’ll still witness a human dumpling factory upon entering.

IMG_4269

My dates – Tamlyn and Tsai!

IMG_4271

We ordered String Beans…

DSCN3787

…Veggie Pork Dumplings…

DSCN3805.JPG

…and buns.

DSCN3803

DSCN3812

Of course, their famous Pork Xiao Long Bao.

DSCN3792

DSCN3794

Tamlyn was in the know for dessert – she not only ordered these little guys stuffed with red beans…

DSCN3825

…but also black sesame (<—these aren’t even on the menu)!

DSCN3822

FYI – they don’t take reservations, so the best time to go is when we went – 3pm on a weekday.
