Commissary at the Line Hotel

restaurant - salads - sandwich - vegetarian

I make it no secret that I adore Roy Choi.  Pumped to finally check out his new restaurant, Commissary, on the 2nd floor of The Line Hotel, upstairs from Pot Cafe.

Just like at A Frame, the plates are mismatched.  It reminded me of my own dinner parties, where we serve things out of random containers…

…both thrilled and horrified that this $13 White Fir cocktail came in a plastic deli container.

The Chef’s sense of humor is appreciated.

You can’t really make requests; you have to just trust that they know what they’re doing.  Sam doesn’t like cilantro, so our server made a note of that.

It was really fun just calling out random items and seeing what arrived.

“Carrots!”

“Bok choy!”

DSCN6006

“Lettuce!”

DSCN6005

“Corn!”

For those of you who saw the film Chef, you will appreciate this grilled cheese.

Other mains included a schnitzel and scallops, a side of fries…

…and a pretty traditional Cobb.

Reviews for this place have been mixed – I admit that some of the dishes (like the salad, above and the dessert – Meringue with Rhubarb and Lemon Anglaise – below) were just okay.

But the veggie dishes were truly phenomenal, as were the ambiance and service.  I loved that our waiter, Steve, brought out a packet of Coriander (Cilantro) Seeds for Sam to take home.

Food, Wine, and Cakemix

food events

The 3rd Annual LA Food and Wine Festival is coming up!!! I got a sneak peek with one of the celebs that will be there, Duff Goldman, at Cakemix

DSCN8917

…been wanting to decorate here since the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck parked outside. It’s Color Me Mine meets bakery – I brought my secret weapon, Joy, who is exceedingly talented at every single thing she does – to help with the evening’s competition.

DSCN8933

The contest theme was “California Cuisine.” We got some tips from The Ace of Cakes himself!!!

DSCN8937

Also crafting at our table was Chef Eric Greenspan, whose short rib grilled cheeses are legendary.

DSCN8913

I nibbled on one of those, plus all these jelly beans, while we worked…

DSCN8935

…I remembered (from The Brown Derby at Disney World) that the Cobb Salad was invented in Los Angeles. We made one with eggs, avocado…

DSCN8947

…cherry tomato, carrots…

DSCN8943

…bacon and “blue” cheese.

DSCN8948

Completely floored by all the other creations…

…and announced ours the winner!!!!!!!

DSCN8963

I may look speechless, but in reality I screamed the entire time, like a crazy woman.

Really did NOT think we would win!

Joy and I split our baby in two…

…and I ate a slice with Abe at home.

Howdy!

grin smiley

I hope your weekend was as lovely as mine! Yesterday I ate brunch at Veggie Grill – ordered my favorite, the All Hail Kale

Traded bites with Abe for my second favorite dish, the Sante Fe Crispy Chickin’ sandwich

We met a friend to see the new Errol Morris documentary, Tabloid

IMG_2728.JPG

I didn’t know anything about Joyce McKinney before seeing this, but what a CRAZY story (or bunch of stories, I should say)! If you like This American Life, you will LOVE this movie. It’s bananas!

We hung out with Julius for a few hours before checking out the Los Feliz Village Street Fair

IMG_2732.JPG

There was live music, a guy with a cat on his shoulder….

IMG_2737.JPG

…and lots of food!!!

IMG_2739.JPG

But I just wasn’t feeling any of it; not even in the mood for this pizza place I’ve been wanting to try:

IMG_2745.JPG

Just wanted to make something at home. Earth Balance sent some free coupons to try their vegan products, and I picked up a jar of Mindful Mayo.

I saw somewhere (probably Paula Deen) that you can substitute mayonnaise for butter on grilled cheese sandwiches. Certainly spreads easier!

IMG_2751.JPG

On the other side of the Silver Hills bread slices – Jarlsberg Lite + Dried Fig Compote

IMG_2759.JPG

A little handful of baby spinach in the middle

IMG_2771.JPG

Grill both sides until brown (2-3 minutes on high)

IMG_2783.JPG

IMG_2786.JPG

I took the sandwich made from the loaf heels, but photographed Abe’s, which was prettier

IMG_2791.JPG

For dessert, we shared the Embrace Sweets cookie…

IMG_2804.JPG

…with the watermelon chunks that never got made into cheeseburgers

IMG_2807.JPG

Oatmeal cranberry with big chunks of walnut – so yummy dipped into hot cocoa!
