I Am a Rock, I Am an Island

eating disorders - restaurant

Islands sent me a gift card for Christmas.  I asked Sam and John to come along and help us spend it…

…on my favorite appetizers…

IMG_3177 …and of course, their delicious burgers.

I only ate a turkey patty wrapped in lettuce, with a side of steamed veggies.  I received a comment on Instagram that this looked like “an eating issue.”

As much as I hate to admit it – even though I’m not trying to lose weight – I’m on a diet.  I did order off the “Skinny” menu and it made me cringe.  For the last 6 years I’ve explained “The Actor’s Diet is actually NOT a diet” and that’s just not true right now, nor will it be until I’m done shooting this secret project in June.

I’m realizing I can diet and not be anorexic, the same way I can consume thousands of calories at a food event and not be bingeing.  Also, I DO have an eating issue – I always will.  I’m just thankful my eating issues are not how I identify myself anymore, that they don’t take over my life, nor ruin an evening out with friends.  I think back to those years of struggling, obsessing, freaking out, and none of that’s happening now.  I’m just eating the way I need to for my job.  I trust myself not to abuse myself – because I know that if my eating issue really escalated back into an EATING ISSUE I wouldn’t need someone else telling me that it was.  I’d definitely know.

Thick Dumpling Skin is being honored this weekend at Kearny Street Workshop’s Celebrate Your Body Event; I recorded this video for them.

For me, “Celebrating Your Body” doesn’t mean rah rah rah everything is peaches and cream no matter what so lets eat those peaches and cream it means acknowledging the struggles, accepting them, choosing to work through it (or not), and moving on to what’s actually important – living my life.

Art’s Deli

brunch - restaurant - sandwich

Randall/Jae/Ruby do, too, and they treated me to a late birthday brunch on Sunday.

I did not go for a sandwich that afternoon, opting for my typical omelet order instead…

…but Jae did.

…more eggs, and Abe’s Vegetarian Reuben and fries – both of which I stole bites of.

Food was so solid.  I want to come back and eat everything on their big, massive menu.

Pono Burger

dessert - restaurant - salads

Pono Burger has been on my radar since it opened last year; I was invited for a hosted lunch, to see what Chef Makani Gerardi (of Hawaii’s Ultimate Burger) did with the Santa Monica Space…

…housed in a Quanset Hut from World War II.

They’ve got a Wood-Fire Grill…

…where all their burgers are cooked.

The Paniolo – English Smoked Cheddar, Niman Ranch Bacon, Coffee/Bourbon/BBQ Sauce, topped with Buttermilk Beer-Battered Onion Rings…

…The Piku “Fig” Burger – Fermier Brie, Niman Ranch Bacon, Crushed Hazelnuts, Arugula, Balsamic Vinaigrette, and Drunken Caramelized Fig Jam…

…and The Kuawa Crunch – Hook’s 1 Year Cheddar, Housemade Potato Chips, Lettuce, Coleslaw, and Guava Rum Sauce.

My favorite was the fig, though each one was quite juicy, flavorful, and unique.  All of the above were made with Organic Beef; they also have a free-range, antibiotic-free Turkey Patty and a Portobello Mushroom Option.

Another vegetarian item – a Seasonal Salad with a Beet’s “Nest,” Chèvre, and pistachios, tossed in Balsamic Vinaigrette…

…and of course, the fries.

Last, but not least – dessert – there are several milkshakes on the menu, made from Straus Family Organic Ice Cream.  We sipped on the Seasonal Special – a Pumpkin S’more, complete with hot fudge, whipped cream, crushed Graham Crackers, and Toasted Marshmallows.

Great food, great ethics, great space – kid friendly (with sliders on the menu) and if you want to bring your pooch, they’ve got a patio too!
