Carnivore

dinner - movies - restaurant

The Surrogate Valentine/Daylight Savings Double Feature is tonight so I gathered together with my cast/crew for a day-before dinner.

“I thought you were a vegan,” Mike said.

IMG_9571

Uh….nope! I’ve been wanting to try Feng Mao Mutton Kebab 2 for a while now, just never had a group big enough to go in on a meat fest with me. We took up half the place!

IMG_9618

It’s in Koreatown, so we started off with complimentary banchan

IMG_9575

…and egg custard…

IMG_9579

…I devoured 2 plates that looked like this while going over the menu.

IMG_9581

As you can see, this place is also Chinese; I spoke in broken Mandarin with the waitress, then gave up. Deciding on food for a huge group frightens me!

IMG_9573

Gary took over the ordering, and also the BBQ duties…

IMG_9586

…though we got a lot of help from the servers.

IMG_9592

So. Much. Meat!

IMG_9594

I lost count of how many I had. At least a dozen. Maybe 15?

IMG_9587

Mostly mutton, dipped in cumin seasoning. But plenty of pork + beef soaked in sauce…

IMG_9598

…and chicken, straight up!

IMG_9610

In addition to all of those skewers, I ate 3 pieces of fried prawns in mayo with walnuts…

IMG_9608

…and probably 4 pieces of this fried salted…cod? Pork? I can’t remember anymore!

IMG_9616

More double fried something was also consumed…

IMG_9589

…in addition to Ma Po Tofu. Which also had meat.

IMG_9602

IMG_9603

There were vegetarian skewer options too, I just didn’t have any…

IMG_9593

…though I did try some of Abe’s bok choy with shrooms.

IMG_9612

IMG_9614

God, the food was really good. I don’t know how, but we conquered all of it!

IMG_9623

Probably best not to wear cashmere, like I did. Julius is gonna be obsessed with this sweater!

Feng Mao Mutton Kebab 2 (I just love saying that) is within walking distance of one of LAAPFF’s theaters, CGV Cinemas. We wobbled over to the 9:30pm screening of Viette

IMG_9627

…written/directed by and starring one of our very talented dinner dates, Mye.

IMG_9629

An intense, important, incredibly powerful and personal movie.

A lot to digest last night.

Mostly Mangoes

acting - party

Some days, as I drive for hours around town all day to audition 5 minutes (for a part I most likely won’t get) I wonder, “Why in the world do I do this?”

IMG_7846.JPG

(Devoured in traffic – dried fruit. The bag says “peaches” but it was mostly mango.)

IMG_7849

Last night was a nice reminder of why I put up with all the show biz crap…I’ve worked my entire life (since I was 5-years-old) in this industry, and need to celebrate any achievements, because they’re rare. The LA Asian Pacific Film Festival helped me do just that, with its official launch party at Xai Verandah Lounge last night…

IMG_7856

…I’m in five movies this year – here’s one of them!

IMG_7892

The entire restaurant was rented out for the event – and what a lovely space it was…

IMG_7858

IMG_7888

…as you can see, it was a wee bit crowded, so once I reached the food, I loaded my plates up!

IMG_7863

Alongside Fattoush salad were baba ganoush + hummus with pita chips…

IMG_7869

…chicken and rice…

IMG_7871

…and bread pudding to finish –

IMG_7874

A LOT of everything…didn’t want to stand in that line again…

IMG_7879

…don’t know how I shook as many hands as I did carrying these two (plus my drink)!

IMG_7876

The hookah smoke was bothering me; I wound up moving to the bar area.

IMG_7881

Ate everything on my dinner plate, left a lot of dip behind (mostly because there was nothing to scoop it up anymore)…

IMG_7882

…but I did wolf down this entire dessert. With white chocolate and coconut, it was delicious – couldn’t put down my fork!

IMG_7885

Yes, sometimes the constant negativity of this profession I’ve chosen gets to me, but at the end of the day, it’s great to realize you’re surrounded by support…

IMG_7893

…thank you VC for providing a warm, welcome home, all these years.

Tickets for all five of my movies are on sale now – I will definitely be at the Q&A’s for “Yes We’re Open,” the “Surrogate Valentine” double feature, and “Nice Girls Crew.” Hope to see you there!

SFIAAFF Closing Night

dessert - travel

What a week! Lack of sleep, time zone changes, constant adrenaline pumping, etc. have really confused my poor body. Even though San Fran is one of my favorite cities to explore and eat, I barely left Japantown yesterday.

IMG_0715.JPG

My stomach has been out of whack as well. I awoke from my nap to find this gorgeous Croissant Bread Pudding from La Boulange that Abe brought back, but wasn’t hungry for it.

IMG_0717.JPG

No appetite for the spread at the SFIAAFF Surrogate Valentine Pre-Reception, either…

IMG_0724.JPG

IMG_0719.JPG

…not even for Thick Dumpling Skins!

IMG_0721.JPG

Way too excited for our screening, which played to an enthusiastic sold-out crowd

IMG_0734.JPG

I watched alongside the very talented singer/songwriter Jane Lui (look for a collaboration in the future!!!)

IMG_0730.JPG

Speaking of music, Goh played a few songs before the screening started

IMG_0742.JPG

The response was terrific – he is based in the Bay Area, and parts of “Surrogate Valentine” were filmed here (read the behind-the-scenes recaps) so DVD’s/records were selling like hot cakes; don’t forget – you can preorder your copies now too!!!

IMG_0743.JPG

I’ve had so much fun promoting the movie with these guys the last 8 days

IMG_0748.JPG

…but around 11pm I needed to cut out early from the after party and get back to our room to pack…and my half of that bread pudding!

IMG_0754.JPG

It was amazing, of course. (How could it not be?!?)

And that concludes the Film Festival portion of this trip. Next, I’m taking Abe to Napa for his 35th Birthday. Looking forward to recharging a bit before we head back to Los Angeles and our regular old lives.
