Peanut, Peanut Butter

blogger meetup - dessert - snacks - vegetarian

Had an impromptu blind date with fellow actress and food blogger Amy yesterday!

Since it was National Peanut Butter Day, I called about 10 businesses to see if they carried any appropriate creamy, nutty treats for our meetup. To my surprise, only 3 did; forgot that one was completely allergen-free – and I think I offended them (sorry).

PB Pinkberry was what I was jonesing for, but it had already been discontinued at the closest location. Went with the next best option:

Don’t think I’ve ever been to Twirl and NOT overloaded my cup with a smorgasbord of at least different 5-6 flavors/fruits/toppings. In honor of this national holiday, I showed a lot of restraint – just FroYo…

IMG_6525

…and Peanut Butter Chips…

IMG_6527

…pleased to say it satisfied my craving!

IMG_6530

We parted just as the sun went to sleep.

IMG_6536

Wasn’t too hungry at dinnertime, so I ate melon and miso

IMG_6556

…then around 10pm, I broke into the only Peanut Butter left in the house (from our Halloween stash)

IMG_6585.JPG

All that sugar had me craving salt – two handfuls of Pretzel Crisps before bed!

A little trivia – one of my first professional gigs was singing the “Peanut, Peanut Butter – and Jelly” song for The Merrill Staton Children’s Voices. I have never heard the finished product – if anyone remembers growing up listening to this recording, please let me know – I’ve been curious about the end result my entire life!!!

Are you allergic to peanuts? If not, did you celebrate yesterday?

My Dinner with Ironman

blogger meetup - dessert - dinner - food events - restaurant - vegan

Last night I was invited to a media dinner sponsored by OpenSky at Cru in Silver Lake

IMG_4553

I’ve been wanting to try this vegan restaurant for years – it’s tiny; our party took up 1/2 the space!

IMG_4554

First to arrive – plenty of time to check out the menu…

IMG_4555

…and the amazing bathroom ceiling!!!

IMG_4558 IMG_4560

Soon after, other people started showing up, including my dear buddy Leslie

IMG_4563

…and a blogger I’ve been trying to meet up with for months – Bess!

IMG_4600

The man of the hour was one of OpenSky’s curators, Brendan Brazier. I was already familiar with him because Christy was obsessed with his book, so it was cool to pick his brain about exercise and nutrition. But even more interesting was talking to him about the similarities between actors and athletes.

IMG_4617

Onto the food! Cru’s menu is almost entirely raw; we started off by sharing all the appetizers…

Mezze Platter

IMG_4566

Rubbed Garlicky Kale, Tunisian Apple Beet Salad, Fig Pate, Cucumber Tztziki, Olives, and Cashew Cheese – with Flax and Pumpkin Seed Crackers

IMG_4574

I tried a piece of the Bruschetta – more cashew cheese with tomato, capers, basil, red bell peppers, sun dried tomatoes, chive oil, served on a sunflower seed and kabocha squash flatbread

IMG_4569

One of the Nachos – Dehydrated flax and corn chips, pumpkin seed chorizo, guac, salsa, vegan nacho cheese and cashew coconut sour cream

IMG_4576

I had two spring rolls…

IMG_4583

…and an amuse-bouche as well

IMG_4590

For my entree I ordered one of the few cooked menu items – quinoa risotto with asparagus and mushrooms

IMG_4602

Wound up polishing off the salad, and taking most of it home for Abe…

IMG_4612

…I also traded bites with other peeps at the table – Cru Pizza…

IMG_4604

…mac n cheese (the other only non-raw option)…

IMG_4606

…and a raw veggie lasagna made of zucchini, pesto, shrooms, cashew cheese, and coconut cream

IMG_4610

For dessert I had a bite of the Banana Cream…

IMG_4613

…and Chocolate Mousse pies

IMG_4616

What a delicious, fun evening…

IMG_4599.jpg

…woke up STILL totally stuffed this morning. Who says raw food isn’t filling?!?

And the Grammy Goes To…

blogger meetup - fruit - music

It’s so nice to have a fellow food blogger in the neighborhood! This morning I met up with Angela (who you may have heard on APM’s “The Splendid Table“) and we hit the Larchmont Farmer’s Market

IMG_3035

She picked through leaves, I picked up some flowers…

IMG_3039

…and then we started sampling!

IMG_3026

Tapenades from Domenico’s Foods

IMG_3028  IMG_3030

Cream Cheese Scones from Sugarbird Sweets

IMG_3050

Mom’s Products Olives

IMG_3052

Apple and Peach Pie shots from Cutie Pie That

IMG_3047

IMG_3048

And as usual, tons o fruit

IMG_3058

IMG_3040 IMG_3036

IMG_3055

I tried jujubes this time! They taste very apple-esque and crisp – not too sweet

IMG_3056

After parting ways, I headed downtown with Abe

IMG_3068

(Can you believe the side of a major highway looks like the set of a high school play?)

IMG_3071

We checked out the Grammy Museum at L.A. Live. No pix to share, unfortunately.

IMG_3070

Living Social Deal = 1/2 price

IMG_3069

It’s a small museum but we had fun…the weekend’s a good time to go – it was pretty empty so all the recording booths were free. That’s right, we laid down some tracks!

But seriously, if you want to hear some music Abe and I did a long time ago (in a galaxy far far away) check out our band’s ancient myspace page.

Perfect Pie

blogger meetup - dessert - dinner

How cute is Marian the Foodie (and her phone)?!? We had a late afternoon meetup at Bricks and Scones

IMG_2411

Dinner last night = odds and ends from the fridge

IMG_2417

  • 2 Yves Veggie dogs, chopped
  • Crushed garlic/ginger
  • Red cabbage + carrot shreds
  • Brown rice
  • Sprinkle Seasoning Salt
  • Squirt of Bragg Liquid Aminos

IMG_2422

Random…

IMG_2424

…but not bad

IMG_2431

Banana Cream Pie from Border Grill, however, was a home run

IMG_2434

Abe and I both flipped out over this dessert

IMG_2438

Bananas? Perfect. Whipped Cream? Perfect. Crust?

IMG_2445

Yes, that was perfect too.

IMG_2452

Afterwards, we went to see a friend’s play reading

IMG_2457

There was cake at the theater. But I was still pie-whipped so I had none.

IMG_2458

Would you rather have cake or pie?

Usually I would choose cake. But last night the pie won.

Black Bagging It

bakeries/cafes/dessert places - blogger meetup - lunch - sandwich

Earlier last month, I watched Los Angeles work itself into a tizzy over the opening of Top Chef winner Michael Voltaggio’s gourmet sandwich counter. This afternoon I made plans to meet the lovely Esi there for lunch.

IMG_1995

Ink.Sack is teeny tiny…

IMG_2009

…with a matching menu (and prices)

IMG_1999

There’s nothing vegan here, but vegetarians are able to get the “Maple Turkey Melt” sans meat, plus extra cheese as an option. I ordered the Cold Fried Chicken

IMG_2007

Apparently the ranch dressing is made by spinning buttermilk in a centrifuge…

IMG_2005

…I’ve no idea what the heck that means. But the sandwich is freaking delicious. And at $4 the price (and size) were just right.

Although the place was crowded, we didn’t have to wait too long at peak lunch hours. I was grateful, since I’d read about super long lines when they first opened…

IMG_1996

…but be prepared to stand and devour

IMG_1994

We wound up dining by the customer-created chalkboard art

IMG_1997

IMG_2010

Or you can just grab your food to go – in the appropriate colored bags (I’ll forgive them for spelling my name wrong)

IMG_2003

Why does soda taste so much better out of a glass bottle?!?

IMG_2001

I felt like an Adrien Brody commercial walking back to my car in that fancy ‘hood

IMG_2011

The Voltaggio brother’s fine-dining restaurant ink. opens tonight a few doors down – maybe I can convince Esi to meet me there once I can actually get a reservation?
