BVSLA
BVSLA stands for “Best Vegetarian Sandwiches in Los Angeles” – a list I began compiling in June 2010 after reading the Grub Street Los Angeles’ Sandwich Register. I love sandwiches. I can’t wait to visit the places mentioned on Grubstreet, but most of them are pretty heavy on the meat and cheese, which would send my cholesterol levels into overdrive if I went down the list too quickly. Plus, my husband Abe is a vegetarian, which would make exploring a lot less fun. So that got me thinking, what are the best VEGETARIAN sandwiches in Los Angeles?
Thanks to readers, L.A. food bloggers, and some lively message board discussion on Chowhound and Yelp, BVSLA suggestions have grown to over 50!!!
Here are the contenders I’ve tried and liked so far:
- Avocado, Chickpea, Alfalfa Sprouts and Tahini Tartine (vegan): Le Pain Quotidien
- BBQ Pulled Pork (vegan): Doomie’s
- Burrata Cheese: All About the Bread
- Cheddar, Sundried Tomato, Avocado, and Red Onion: The Cheese Store of Silverlake
- Chicken Parm (vegan): Doomie’s
- “Chicken” Sandwich (vegan): Veggie Grill
- Grilled Cheese: Locali
- Grilled Veggie Panini: Greenleaf Gourmet Chopshop
- “I Am Extraordinary” BLT (vegan): Cafe Gratitude
- Portobello Mushroom (vegan): Sunpower Natural Cafe

I would like to try all of those. I love sandwiches.
If you come to Hawaii- Bale’s for Bahn Mi! Someone told me that they’ve opened a couple up on the mainland, so maybe there’s one near you.
Dangit, I wish I was closer to these places! They all sound so good!
