Free Range LA

I first met Jesse Furman, the owner of Free Range LA at Coffee + Food a few years ago – back then, then only way to experience his fried chicken was via a stand at The Melrose Place Farmers Market, or if you were lucky enough to attend an event he was catering.

Now they’ve got a truck – and it’s parked outside the Commissary on Fairfax for breakfast (7-11am), and the one on Sunset for lunch (noon-2:30pm).

I opted to try the latter, so I could meet up with Abe/Dimitri during their BuzzFeed lunch break…

FYI you can sit inside the cafe (and order drinks there) – which was very necessary, since it’s still H-O-T.

Slow Cooker Sweet Potatoes

I usually bake my sweet potatoes in large batches, but in the summertime, I choose to ignore the oven.

Crockpot, who knew you were my year-round buddy?  Scrub the potatoes clean, pierce them with a fork, wrap in foil, and slow cook on low for 6-8 hours.

Eat with maple butter

…or mash it up!  I used Trader Joe’s Boxed Carrot Ginger Soup to thin some out…

I wouldn’t really call this a crockpot “recipe” (<—click for past blog posts) but I’m definitely using this method to make sweet potatoes from now on.

More Sun More Cafe

SunCafe Organic is one of my favorite vegan restaurants in Los Angeles.  They moved, but just up the street…

Everything is kosher, dairy-free (ask about eggs, vegans!) and really fast n fresh.  Yummy too – though warning – VERY MESSY.
