CoFax Coffee

bakeries/cafes/dessert places - breakfast - vegetarian

McKenna recently revealed her obsession with the breakfast burritos at CoFax Coffee.

Since then, I’ve heard about this place almost every day – it became our quest to try one.

We stopped by the small (crowded!) spot and ordered one to go…

We agree – it’s one of the best in the city.  The smokiness of the potatoes and depth of flavor in their homemade salsas bring this to another level.

Also love that it’s not monster huge.  I usually finish breakfast burritos in a food coma.

I’m a fan of the owners’ other restaurants, too – Golden State (next door) and Bludso’s.

Dolce Isola

bakeries/cafes/dessert places - blogger meetup

That’s my new blogging buddy Caroline!  She was my date while touring B&K Sugar Arts Lab; afterwards we sauntered down the street to Dolce Isola

…a.k.a. The Ivy Bakery.  I’ve eaten at The Ivy once, long before blogging, with Poom – she was in town visiting and wanted to spot a celebrity.  (We saw Hulk Hogan.)

This cafe is a lot more manageable; we went the day before Thanksgiving, so there were lots of pies on the counter…

…I was also intrigued by the gelato…

…but we wound up with flakey, buttery croissants.  There was a pumpkin cookie, too – didn’t snap a photo, but it was perfection.

South Pasadena’s Cookies and Cream

bakeries/cafes/dessert places

Most of the places I wrote about in the LA Weekly article I’d been to before – one shop that I discovered while doing research was Cookies & Cream.

It was just so darn charming…

…and I thought the guy who ran it was fascinating.

IMG_1037 IMG_1039 …and I did sample a couple of his unique creations (Jakarta Cookie, above and Taro Cakes, below)…

…but of course, I was there for one thing.  It didn’t remind me of Maine, where I spent many summers eating ice cream, but it did make me nostalgic.

P.S. Happy National Cookie Day!  Here’s my go-to recipe this time of year.
