This meal is hosted.
Yes, I live within walking distance from Salt and Straw on Larchmont, but that doesn’t mean I will not drive to Salt and Straw DTLA for free ice cream! They invite me in to check out the new shop in the Downtown Los Angeles Arts District, located at 829 East 3rd Street.
It’s very similar to the vibe of the Larchmont store – except taller and longer, with more seating options. There’s still the same pints to go, and a store featuring local goods…
…and of course you get lots of sampling at the counter before deciding on what ice cream you want. It is Thanksgiving so they have a couple flavors I’m already familiar with from two years ago, like Salted Caramel Thanksgiving Turkey. Something new this season is Buttered Mashed Potatoes and Gravy. It is exactly like one of my favorite side dishes, and yet not at all – because it’s sweet! FYI both of those flavors contain meat.
I wind up with a scoop of California Acorn and Chestnut Stuffing, which IS vegetarian-friendly and a Los Angeles exclusive. It has a molasses flavor to it, and would taste amazing on pie. Or, oatmeal.
Plus Roasted Strawberry and Toasted White Chocolate – yes they toast the chocolate! They use Oxnard strawberries and you can really taste the big chunks inside.
It’s really hard to park in this area so Abe waits outside in the car and we devour it in the front seat. Obviously, we love the shop we have in our neighborhood, but if we are ever downtown with friends, this is the perfect place to meet up.
