TikiFish Poke and Ceviche

So I just spent an hour and a half trying to renew my Covered CA insurance and I’m still not sure I did it right.  Probably not.  I really need a vacation!  #TBT to the day I went to TikiFish with my buddy Amy Tangerine.

For some reason, it seems like a more “authentic” place than the other poke joints popping around the city.  I actually haven’t been to Hawaii since I was a little kid, but Amy goes pretty often.  She tells me this place transports her right back to the poke restaurants.  Really fresh fish, really simple toppings.

You can design your own meal – pick a size, a base (rice/salad), a protein, mix-ins, sauce, and toppings.  But we go in for a tasting, so they make us mini-portions of their ready-made creations.  Everything – and I mean everything – is really delicious.  And yet, each bowl is different.  Sometimes I find that poke starts to taste the same – the same fish, rice, sauce.  But each dish is carefully crafted to highlight the texture and flavor in a unique way.

There is also ceviche!  While the poke is raw, the fish in these are cooked by the acid.  They come with fun crackers and chips, instead of rice.  I don’t think I have ever walked into a place and ordered ceviche before.  But this is actually the fish I enjoy most of all, of everything we try.  There’s something about eating saltines in public that makes me happy.

Last but not least, something for the vegetarians and vegans.  This is a bowl we create ourselves – with tofu and edamame for protein, on a salad.  Abe winds up with the leftovers, of course.

Oh, and Agua Frescas!  I’m not really a big juice person (I have a thing about drinking my calories still in my head from the eating disorder days) but I have a sip.  It actually tastes like sunshine.  I wind up giving the rest to Amy, who is ecstatic.  She says this is similar to the beverages they gave her at the maternity ward when she was having her baby.  Now that may sound crazy that a hospital makes amazing juice, but Amy insists it is just like this one – so it must be good.
