Vegetarian Sandwiches for the Weird Al Concert at The Hollywood Bowl.
I once met Weird Al, almost six years ago, at Greenleaf Gourmet Chopshop. I never approach celebrities – especially when they’re not working and enjoying their private time – but I really couldn’t help myself with him; he was such a part of my youth. “Eat It,” “Rocky Road,” “Fat,” – the man knows how to make food funny!
He was beyond charming and friendly. I remember thinking, as we snapped the photo, he has the glowing skin of a Victoria Secret Supermodel. I had heard he was a longtime vegetarian – confirmed by google. So of course, when we ordered tickets to see him perform at The Hollywood Bowl, I packed meat-free sandwiches in his honor.
There’s about a million ways to do this. We used Thin Slice Good Seed Dave’s Killer Bread, which tastes sweet and hearty. I spread them with hummus on one side, mustard + Sriracha Mayo on the other. Stuffed with cheddar cheese, avocado, sprouts, and jarred red/yellow peppers.
They were so packed they didn’t have room for any tomatoes! By the time we got to our seats and ate them, they were a little soggy, but I actually love semi-wet sandwiches. They remind me of my youth, listening to Weird Al in my bedroom and feeling alive.
P.S. If you haven’t listened to Weird Al in a long time, do yourself a favor and watch the video for Word Crimes. A modern masterpiece.
