I honestly didn’t know what to make of DeSano Pizza Bakery when I first heard about it. Neapolitan Pizza, popularized in Nashville/Charleston, in a 7000 square foot space across the street from Immaculate Heart of Mary Church on Santa Monica near Alexandria (and not much else)….
Order at the counter, then have a seat at one of the communal tables. This reminded me of a beer garden….
…meets kitchen. These wood-fired ovens (recently blessed by the priest from the aforementioned Catholic Church) are NO JOKE.
I nibbled on my Spinach Salad and watched our pie get made, which took mere minutes.
Oh, how I love a perfect chewy, charred crust. This was the Verdura – Broccoli Rabe, Mushroom, Cherry Tomato, Garlic, and Buffalo Mozzarella.
(DIY toppings too.)
When he found out I ate meat, the owner, Scott DeSano hooked me up with a Napoletana pie – similar, except less veggies and added sausage. Next time, we’re definitely going to order something with their sauce, made from San Marzano tomatoes.
To end, gelato made by Alessandro Fontana (the dessert menu includes biscotti/cannoli too).
They sold out of almost all the flavors except for this one – which also happened to be vegan!
Loved how unpretentious and warm this place felt. The sweetest, most attentive staff ever (that’s the pizza maker Massimilano Di Lascio).
With plenty of free parking, this is definitely going to be our go-to for large groups, casual date night, and quick takeout!
