I’ve driven by Galco’s a number of times and have always been curious. I knew that they sold vintage soda…
….from Huell Howser and all the other press they’ve received…
….but at Party #2 Saturday, an old college friend informed me they also sold candy.
You bet that got my ass out to Highland Park the very next day!
I was like a kid in a (soda pop that also sells) candy store.
Me and my big hunk got a cart and started filling it.
Along with the sweets, there are all sorts of beers…
…for my friend Emily Chang…
…and my fellow Les Miserables fans…
…they also have sandwiches!
We skipped those and focused on what they’re famous for.
Lots of rare stuff, but also familiar favorites (my brother-in-law Zack named his old cat after this)…
…including Foxon Park’s Birch Beer (which we’ve only seen at Pepe’s Pizzeria).
Got a Diet one, plus an Idaho Spud to share.
Abe drank more of the soda, and I ate more of the chocolate…
…filled with marshmallow and covered with coconut.
We both agreed it would’ve been neat if there were some potato chips stuffed in there, but I guess they didn’t do that sorta thing back in 1918!

That Idaho Spud sounds amazing! I love chocolate and coconut AND marshmallow. I’ll have to try it.
I used to love Galco’s; I’m local and grew up shopping there but I haven’t gone since the controversy late last year. Turns out the owner is very aggressive in his opposition to cyclists & bike lanes, which is too bad.

I have read your faqs and followed your blog for almost two years, I love it. I was just asking. Sorry, I know you’ve said you have an attachment to diet soda, I just wondered if it was only diet? I’ve struggled with an e.d. as well and was just asking from one persons to another. Sorry if I upset you.
