I only heard about Thank You for Coming a few days ago, after seeing this photo on my friend Raina’s Instagram.

The caption read – “.69 cent dinner items.” Of course, I was intrigued, and had to check it out.

Turns out the 69-cent theme is part of this month’s artist residency program. Thank You For Coming is a “collectively-run, experimental food and art space” in Atwater Village.

Met up with Dave and Mye as they were opening – all the cooking is done voluntarily with whatever resources they have on hand, so we waited while they got things going.

On the walls were recipes of dishes that cost 69-cents…

…and here’s what they look liked today – couscous salad…

…tofu spring rolls…

(peanut and sriracha were also 69-cents extra)

…beans with bay leaf and orange zest…

(34-cents worth of flavoring added)

…and a bowl of carrot soup.

You can pay the tab, or donate extra.

Thank You For Coming reminds me of vegan community programs I saw while touring Germany/Czech Republic and wished existed in Los Angeles. I definitely want to come back, volunteer my time, and maybe try to do my own artist residency in the future?

I really, really love this idea – it’s so simple and a great way to raise awareness about the low cost of simple, healthy and well-prepared food. Plus, you’ve gotta love the art tie-in. Totally the kind of thing I would hope would pop up in Brooklyn/Astoria.
What a beautiful concept! I’m definitely going to pay them a visit as soon as possible. And if you decide to volunteer, please let me know! I’d love to join you. (:
Seems the perfect locale/theme to screen Yes, We’re Open.
Awesome!! Keep it up Lynn! Happy CNY
I wanna cook there!
as this month’s resident I encourage all LA area food activist to explore TYFC and see how you might help change the landscape in Atwater. It’s an incredible place.
