Remember Cousin Kristine?

She’s got a brand new book coming out soon…

…and we got to sample some of her gluten-free cooking yesterday!

Started off with some yam + carrot nibbles with a yogurt lime dip…

…here’s the rest of the brunch menu…

…you can get Kristine’s recipe for Shiitake, Spinach, and Goat Cheese Frittata on her site…

…all gluten-free…

I had seconds on the cornbread, plus homemade jam from Kristine’s stash.

For dessert, cupcakes from BabyCakes. We were auditioning options for my cousin Rachel’s upcoming birthday – everything from Brownie to Red Velvet to Banana…

…I sampled each flavor…

…going back for another taste test…

…but sadly, there weren’t any clear winners. We all agreed the cupcakes left a lot to be desired without the frosting to mask them; they were dry and stale. The brownies weren’t too bad, but I’ve definitely had better gluten-free goodies (like their donuts). Actually, Kristine’s cornbread + jam would be a much tastier dessert!

Back home I watched the Golden Globes and snacked…

…pretty sure that candy’s gluten-free too!

Yum! I would love to hang out and cook with your cousin…for a few…years.

I’m not gluten free, but it would be nice to incorporate some items or have them available for guests who are. I will have to pick up her cookbook.

I’ve also come to the conclusion that there is some sort of cool/awesome requirement to be your cousin. ;)

I’ve only visited Babycakes once, in NYC, because I wasn’t impressed with their cupcakes. This was way before the Larchmont (or former Downtown LA) location opened and I would eventually like to go back to try their donuts, which didn’t exist at the time of my visit. I shall return eventually!

Their waffles are good – but yeah the cupcakes (& pumpkin bread) have been disappointing.
