Thursday afternoon I met up with Jenny at Mendocino Farms…

…they gave us free sweets (this tends to happen when you’re with the Dessert Darling)…

…I combined the two (Oatmeal Raisin and Cranberry White Chocolate) to form one super snack for the car ride home!

No beloved sandwiches for me – I had exciting dinner plans…

…Abe’s working late at Huffington Post Live because of the Democratic National Convention, so I took myself on an Artist’s Date.

Some second-hand shopping…

…followed by Melrose Night, which is the first Thursday of every month.

The Garbage Truck was there – I’ve been excited about trying Rochester’s infamous “Garbage Plates” since hearing Jane and Michael Stern talk about them on The Splendid Table…

…the truck reached out to me earlier this summer to see if I’d review a meal for the blog. Last night was perfect, since almost everything on their menu has meat in it! The only thing a vegetarian like Abe would be able to eat would be plain Home Fries or the Mac Salad sides.

First, the “Trashed” Home Fries – spicy meat sauce, ketchup, mustard, and onion on bite size potatoes…

…I only had a few bites of this one, since there was a lot more to ingest!

Tried one of the pizza logs, which reminded me of an egg roll…

…stuffed with pepperoni and cheese…mmmmm.

Finally, a Trash Plate! Can you believe this was the mini size?

It was a lot like the home fries above, except there was an entire hamburger patty (you can also get chicken, hot dog, Italian Sauasage, or a combo of meats)…

…plus creamy macaroni salad too!

It may sound/look disgusting, but I swear, it was delicious! Like a 4th of July Picnic eaten all at once. The second I took a bite I could not stop – I was a regular little garbage disposal and hovered that entire container down.

One man’s trash…

BIG NEWS for my friend Lauren of Keep It Sweet Desserts!!!

Her amazing cookies (which I’ve been sending to everyone post-funeral as thank-you gifts) are finalists in the Martha Stewart American Made Awards. Congrats, m’dear!!!

Thank you a million, you really are the best!
I’ve heard about the Garbage Truck but (like Abe) wouldn’t have many options to choose from. I’m glad you enjoyed it!
And congratulations to Lauren! <3
I can’t wait to try to the Trash Plate! Wowowow. Thank you for the informative post! : )
I almost went to Melrose Night, but I wasn’t feeling well. I have to make it to one sometime!
Ha! I grew up near Rochester – never knew that food was a thing!
My recollection of local cuisine was thin, amazing New York pizza and fresh sweet corn that was 13 ears for a buck.
I also grew up in Rochester, NY where garbage plates originated and became a local phenomenon. The original plate comes from Nick Tahoe’s and is essentially 2 sides with a meat topping/meat ‘sauce’. Typically its made with mac salad, homefries and topped with two burger patties drenched with meat sauce. Ketchup, mustard and extra onions are always welcome toppers as well. I grew up eating this all the time as a kid and whenever I tell people about it, they just laugh and say “You really ate that”? lol Every time I go back home for a visit a garbage plate is first on my list!
I can’t wait to go one day – even Abe has been there!!!
Awesome! I am slightly obsessed with food trucks (and that looks like one that’s definitely worth visiting), but up until recently, they’ve been fairly scarce in Chicago, thanks to some harsh anti-food truck legislation.
