The Simple Things

July 19, 2012

in dessert, restaurant, salads

There are certain places you just KNOW you’re going to love, even before you’ve set foot inside.

Simplethings is an adorable cafe on 3rd Street that I’ve been wanting to check out since they opened in November 2010, and as their sign says, they specialize in pie…

…but the ENTIRE menu is up my alley. I feel like the chef and I may be soul mates.

Step up to the counter and order – I had a Blackboard Eats deal and scored 30% off for me and my A.W.E. ladies

…wait with your number and never-ending lemon water.

Got the kale special with chicken and corn…

…a seriously stellar salad – right up there with Veggie Grill’s All Hail Kale and Take a Bao’s Asian Cobb.

My dates reported that their sandwiches were equally delectable…

…the Thanksgiving (turkey/cranberry chutney/jalapeno cornbread stuffing/sage gravy)…

…and Shrimp Po Boy.

Finally, it was a pie time!

Teeny tiny, but they have them in all sizes.

This Pumpkin Streusel was JUST crowned the #2 spot on LA Weekly’s Best Pies List

…they were wrong about that $10 Milkshake at Fair Oaks Pharmacy, but not this guy!

Also terrific was the Salted Caramel (<—Elaine and I traded bites).

We finished around 4, so I never got hungry for dinner…

…frozen figs and grapes before bed.

I JUST bookmarked this place as a place I want to try out! I went through a list on the Huffington Post that this place is one of the top places for pie. The salted caramel and the mudslide, I think. Can’t wait to try it!

Wow! This looks spectacular. Lovin’ the colors in that kale salad!

I’m so jealous of Angelenos because they have Lynn to give them so many awesome restaurant reviews. Can anyone recommend bloggers who do the same for New York City? Preferably like Lynn, with a slant towards salads and sweets? :)

check out Fritos and Froie Gras, who did a guest post for me!

Perfect! Thanks, Lynn!

LOVE the mini-pies! What a perfect dessert idea for a cafe. That kale salad looks great too! :0

Did you get pies to go? They stamp little sayings on the inside of their boxes – so adorable – as seen in my blog post –

Key lime is my favorite!

Good to know for next time!

That kale salad (minus the chicken) looks fabulous!

Those pies are the perfect size for an after meal dessert. Sadly, I’m nowhere near LA.

Oh my gosh, that menu! I must get over there stat. The sweet potato sandwich sounds ridiculous.

Must go here on my next LA venture. Must.

Oh, wow! Those pies are so stinkin’ CUTE!!

I drive past there all the time but never knew what sort of things they offered, so I’ve never stopped. I’m so happy to hear that you liked it! I’m definitely going to have to make my way over there ASAP.
And considering I’m hopelessly addicted to the All Hail Kale at Veggie Grill, I’m sure I would LOVE that gorgeous salad!
