in breakfast, snacks

Since Abe’s family headed back to Philly, we’ve inherited their leftover food.

Little Z eats kiddie yogurts. So now we do too!

…Abe was right – this granola is stellar!

Caught up with The Cooking Channel over breakfast…

How I miss Jackson Heights!

There are some restaurants I like in L.A., but we don’t eat nearly as much Indian (or Greek) as we did when we lived in Queens. Do any of you fellow Angelenos have suggestions for some cheap, authentic, vegetarian-friendly places?

No melons were brought back from the vacation home, but we did score a bunch of oranges and apples…

…plus that ginormous bag of Kettle Popcorners. I consumed a crunchy little handful after a lot of navel action.

Pleased to announce that Daylight Savings will be playing The Lighthouse International Film Festival on June 2nd. I won’t be there, but Abe and I ARE thinking about spending a day down the shore in July. As a Jersey girl, I’m ashamed to admit this, but I don’t know of many areas. We’ve already been to Beach Haven, Cape May, and I’ve spent waaaay too much post-prom time in Atlantic City, Point Pleasant, Wildwoods, and Seaside Heights. Would love any additional advice from east coasters for a lovely, fun place to relax.

I’ve got to agree – since moving here from London (and living on the East Coast before that) – I find that Indian food is really not great in LA. There is a South Indian place that’s all vegetarian in Culver City that’s pretty decent, Annapurna. As for North Indian – honestly, I haven’t found many places worth eating at, although if I’m really craving it, there’s a good takeout/delivery place in Hollywood, Gate of India. As for Greek – have you been to Taverna Tony in Malibu? LOVE that place!

That place is a hit or miss. Been twice and had an amazing meal once an a forgettable one the last. But I would still go back. When it’s good it’s really good! Also there is a great Indian restaurant my husband and I used to go to when we lived in Beverly hills but I can’t remember the name – it was by the Beverly center. I think India’s Grill?

I’m grateful I have a pretty decent Indian restaurant barely over a mile from my house. I once forgot my wallet and the owner was all, “Don’t worry. You can pay us the next time you come.” So kind. So nice. Of course, I drove home and back to pay my bill that night, but the generosity was not lost on me.

Hmmmm? Sounds like dinner.

Taras Himalayan Cuisine in Culver City, and Taj Mahal of India on Pico/La Cienega. Papa Cristo's on Pico/Normandy for Greek.

I also miss a lot of restaurants since moving to CA from NY almost a year ago! Luckily, the Bay area has some decent Indian.
I think Sandy Hook, NJ is a low key and pretty beach.

Papa Cristo’s has a fantastic “Big Fat Greek Dinner” every Thursday night, which includes Greek wine-tasting and belly-dancing! I think you can request veggie options in advance. It’s about $25/person. “Yamas!” :)

There’s Samosa House in Culver City! 2 locations~ kind of an Indian cafeteria set up. It’s so good! The “west” location also has a produce store inside
I’m pretty sure it was featured on The Food Network? You must try their veggie chicken, jack fruit and pakora curry! (wow, I just used an insane amount of exclamation points there~)

I second this place! Not sure how authentic it is, but it’s vegan and vegetarian friendly and pretty darn good.

We always go to Margate but that is because my grandfather lives there:-) Have you been to Cape May? It is a bit far south but really nice.

hey, i’m a jersey girl too about to move to LA… funny just a random thing but maybe it makes me like the blog more than just being a foodie/ veggie person.
anyhow, Long Beach Island (LBI) itself is so beautiful i think there is plenty to check out there if you haven’t been!

what about malaysian food? well, the tricky thing about malaysian food is, there are so many types – malay, chinese and indian. i was in LA/orange counties and saw a few malaysian restaurants there. “belacan grill” in tustin is not so bad (i’m malaysian, so naturally very critical of authenticity of our food!). i’ve seen “manja” in hollywood but never got a chance to stop and try it. but heard many good things about it.

Before I was an “Adirondack Chick,” I was a Jersey Girl, too — And, actually still spend part of the week there because of work. Check out Sea Isle City, Ocean City (NJ) or LBI. Enjoy!

It’s funny you should mention Indian, it’s one of my favorite foods and I hadn’t had it in ages… We just recently got a delivery menu from India’s Oven, which I passed for years and didn’t know delivered, and after having it stare at me for several days I broke down and ordered us 2 lunch specials – a tandoori chicken and a vindaloo chicken curry. Both were really, really delicious, and their lunch specials are a GREAT deal! Oh, and since it’s indian, it had veg options for most the dishes (as an ex veggie myself, one of the reasons I loved indian growing up!)… Mmmm curry…

island beach state park!! so many beautiful beaches that are practically empty due to the fact that they are not lifeguarded. if you don’t mind not swimming in the ocean i highly recommend it. also, only $10 to get in (no need to pay for beach tags!) and dogs allowed, i think.

Ocean City, NJ, has a lovely boardwalk (but keep in mind, it's dry, so BYOB).
