We had two birthdays last night!

Both celebrated at RockSugar Pan Asian Kitchen, in the Century City Mall.

[ They're one of the few restaurants that validate valet for free; if you're having trouble parking (like we did) eat here. ]

Aunt Heidi arranged for a customized family-style menu, so all we had to do was sit back and the let the food arrive!

A black sesame rice cracker dipped in a sweet chili sauce…

…one chicken potsticker dipped in citrus soy sauce…

…green mango and papaya salad – with tomato, carrots, crushed peanuts, and crispy shallots…

…two pieces of Vegetarian Flatbread (a.k.a. Scallion Pancakes) with Red Curry Sauce:

They brought Abe a special non-fish-sauce salad with grapefruit, jicama, red cabbage, candied pecans, and rau rum…

…and a Six Grain Hainan Hotpot with Ginger, Garlic, Green Onions, and Cilantro.

The above was probably my favorite, along with the other rice dish below…

…sweetened with Coconut, Lemongrass, Pandan Leaves, and Cashews:

Also excellent were the two main meat entrees -
Grilled Cilantro Shrimp with Coconut Milk/Corn/Sweet Potato…

…and “Princess Chicken” – tempura battered/fried, with peanuts and a palm sugar glaze.

Everything was rounded out by a simple stir fry of asparagus, green beans, shiitakes, bok choy, and snow peas:

Totally stuffed after three platefuls…

…but I had room for dessert!

Caramelized Banana Custard Cake with Nut Brittle/Malted Creme Anglaise and Chocolate Ice Cream…

…Fresh berries with Elderflower Syrup and Creme Fraiche…

Tea too!

After the candles were blown and presents were opened…

…we all headed upstairs for a movie.

Probably not the most family-friendly film, but seeing as we went with Maya to see Borat when she was 9-years-old, it was totally appropriate!

Mmm! Your meal looks so delicious!
I never really had an interest in trying Rock Sugar when I was there, but I must say, everything you had looks delicious.
Wow, it all looks amazing, but especially that caramelized banana custard cake…totally want to reproduce that at home
Oh my gosh, so much food! And it all looks so good. I love green mango salad.
Love RockSugar – as I understand it, they’re the Asian-food branch of the same restaurant group that created The Cheesecake Factory and Grand Lux Cafe. The over the top interior design and big menu says as much!
Tried the lettuce wraps the last time I was there – they rival the wraps at P.F. Chang’s – so good!
