Our cousin Noah (now a Harvard man) came back for the weekend, so we drove to the Westside last night.

Canal Club is an enigma to me! One side of the restaurant was packed with bar stools…

…the other half was empty, with booths.

We sat on the quiet end, under a canopy of Hawaiian shirts…

…and perused the most disjointed menu ever…

…everything from Tacos and Quesadillas, to Sushi and Udon, to BBQ Ribs?!?

The service (though friendly) was equally random – not only did the food take a while, but all of our dishes arrived at different times, even the ones that were ordered as appetizers!

Noshed on a few handful of edamame before my Ahi Tuna Burger finally arrived…

…they actually brought 3 to table (woops) – dunno about the other 2, but this one needed sodium! I added salt to one half, and dipped the other in soy sauce.

Fearful of how long dessert would take, Abe and I decided to swing by CoolHaus on the way back. I’ve been fantasizing about their Culver City storefront, which opened a month after I first tried them. Obviously, I wasn’t the only one…

…spotted myself when they tweeted a pic of the line out the door!!!

The wait wasn’t long, plus I got free samples…

…Peanut Butter Cookie…

…Balsamic Fig Marscapone

Ultimately, I chose Molten Chocolate Cake…

…sandwiched between Flapjack (Maple Pancake) and Chocolate Banana Truffle (vegan) cookies

There’s sitting room inside, but it was getting kinda bonkers in there…

…Abe and I split the creation in the car.

SO FREAKING GOOD. Edible paper too, but I only had a bite.

(Tastes like communion wafers.)

I’m always a little confused/not impressed when restaurants have every sort of cuisine on their menu…

Edible paper, huh? I hate when service is not acceptable at a restaurant. The ice cream does look good. Yay!! There’s a post comment button!

I love Coolhaus! X and I have to go every time he picks me up from work, since it’s on the way home.

That’s so cool that you can customize your ice cream sandwich down to the ice cream flavor and each individual cookie!!!!

I felt the same way when I was at Canal Club! But that’s part of the charm of the place- it’s an anything goes, beachy & casual joint – and I enjoyed it just the way it is :). Definitely not a food destination, but a great casual place for drinks with friends.
