Ketching Up

November 6, 2011

in movies, travel

Last night I wasn’t feeling up to playing tourist – not hungry enough to explore a restaurant, too tired to schmooze at the film fest….

…we wound up going to the Pacific Cinematheque, a cool art-house theater about a 10-minute walk from our hotel.

They were showing a recently restored print of “Come Back to the 5 & Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean” – a 1982 Robert Altman film, starring Cher, Sandy Dennis, Karen Black, and Kathy Bates

Abe did not have kind things to say about their bland popcorn, even after seasoning it with Spike + Brewer’s Yeast

I ate none; when we got out at 9pm I wanted to skip straight to dessert. Since Thierry was a little too packed and fancy for me, I went for the next best thing…

…international snacks!!!

There were many options at The Candy Aisle

Abe and I each bought a bar – Duncan’s Original Ginger + Wunderbar

IMG_7021

The latter was FANTASTIC – like the lovechild of a Twix + Reese’s PB Cup!!! I liked my pick too, but wished there were spicy chunks inside, instead of a general ginger flavor

Also in my little picnic – an apple from the hotel gym and potato chips

But not just any chips…

KETCHUP ONES!!!!

I first discovered ketchup chips when I went to the Toronto Film Festival in 2004. Every time I return to Canada, I make sure to grab a bag. This was my first experience with them in Pringles form.

Don’t forget to fall back! Here’s a song by Goh to remind y’all about Daylight Savings – funny, it’s actually the tentative title of our sequel to Surrogate Valentine

Speaking of which, the screening is tonight at 7:30pm! Any suggestions for a quick dinner near the theater?

I LOVE ketchup. It’s one of those weird things I crave often. I love baked potatoes with ketchup on them!

I always pickup ‘Ringolos’ – I once brought a duffle bag to exclusively bring 20 bags back to the States with me. Although eating that many kinda burned me out on them. http://bit.ly/uQ5ZOi

Hi Lynn,

Welcome to Vancouver! I hope you are enjoying your stay so far. I stumbled upon your blog while searching for good eats in LA and I really like reading your posts. My suggestion for a quick and good dinner is Phnom Penh in Chinatown. It’s a Cambodian restaurant that is well known for their chicken wings. You should definitely check it out!

Congrats on your movie and have an awesome time!

Chamber on Beatty St. is good, but I’m not sure how much time you have for dinner. It opens at 5:30pm. Guu on water st. near waterfront skytrain station serves Japanese tapa, opens at 5:30 as well. Steamwork brewing is ok too, near waterfront skytrain. Or you can go to Yaletwon, lots of restaurants there too. I like the Yaletown Brewing the most.

Hi Lynn!

Here are two good diners near the VAFF theatre. The former is quieter and has decent pies. The latter is a recently reopened
Vancouver classic – and the subject of an
upcoming TV series.

P.S. If walking to VAFF, Acme and Save On are only a few minutes away. They’re both
open before tonight’s SV screening.

Enjoy your Sunday in Vancouver!

Smile. I loved all your snacks. I never order popcorn at the movie theater because I’m almost always disappointed. Candy and pringles? Those I know I can enjoy anywhere! Thanks for sharing. I hope you are having a wonderful day!
