Fluff Ice

dessert

I’m a relative newbie to the shaved ice game.

IMG_3639

In the last two months, I’ve tried the Korean, Taiwanese, Hawaiian, and Filipino versions. Even though summer’s over, the weather is still warm enough for me to justify ice for lunch.

Fluff Ice invited me to check out their store, in a fancy outdoor Monterey Park mini-mall (think The Grove). Yes, I drove half an hour in traffic for free frozen dessert.

But also to see my buddy Koji :)

Started by local residents (just out of college!!!) they’re trying to bring shaved ice to the masses. Only, it’s NOT shaved ice. It’s FLUFF ice.

Huh?

They get asked that a lot, apparently:

You can either order from their ready-made menu…

IMG_3610

…or customize your own:

IMG_3612

Choose a size (I went with Medium)

Then a flavor:

flavros

I sampled four, including the Honeydew, which was really unique. I didn’t order it though, because I had already eaten 1/2 a melon for breakfast. (But if you stop in, you should ask for it specifically, since it’s not on the menu!)

Toppings are much more unique than Pinkberry or Yogurtland. Yes, they still have the usual chocolate chips and such…

IMG_3627

…I went for the egg pudding, taro pudding, strawberries…

IMG_3644

…drizzled with chocolate syrup and sweetened condensed milk

IMG_3641

Also tasted a few boba – including some cool “popping” ones!

IMG_3645

My Fluff Ice flavor was the Original – not too sweet and I wound up getting extra condensed milk added

IMG_3651

Was surprised how well it holds its consistency! Not super-melty at all.

There are similar “shaved snow” places I want to try (Class 302 has been on my list for a while) but they’re a bit further out. Fluff Ice is just close enough to make a weekday trek worth it; plus they have plans to go mobile soon with a food truck (followed by world domination). Check them out on Facebook or Twitter to see when they’re coming near you!

Grubbin’

dessert - restaurant - salads

When we first moved to Los Angeles six years ago, we often went to Grub for brunch. Housed in a 1920’s duplex, the vibe is home-y and chill.

IMG_3545

Then co-owner Betty Fraser was a contestant on Top Chef and it became impossible to eat a leisurely meal in the tiny space without a 45-minute wait.

IMG_3589

Took a while, but we finally returned for their nearly 2-year-old dinner service.

IMG_3554

The place is so cozy at night – and reservations for four were a cinch!

IMG_3551

I chose Grub to meet our new friends Johanna and Patrick for LA Restaurant Week, but none of us wound up ordering from the specially-priced menu

IMG_3557

We munched on carrot sticks n cucumber slices with pretzels and ranch dip while waiting for our orders

IMG_3558

I got the “Beet’s the Alternative” Salad – left off the Gorgonzola, added some chicken

IMG_3567

A very generous portion of herb-seasoned beets with fresh basil, spiced pecans…

IMG_3572

…Mixed Greens tossed in Balsamic Molasses Vinaigrette

IMG_3570

Tried a bite of Patrick’s potatoes…

IMG_3574

…and Johanna’s Mac-n-Cheese with Jalapeño-Bacon

IMG_3561

Abe’s burger had to be sent back to the kitchen – a Garbonzo-Bean-Risotto-Garden-Patty with cheddar, BBQ sauce, and caramelized onions that he ordered vegetarian-ized (but came out with bacon)

IMG_3564

I taste-tested it to make sure there was none on the new version…

IMG_3576

…stole some Black Pepper Potato Chips too

IMG_3578

Using my favorite App, I scored us a free dessert!

IMG_3552

(We made sure they remembered to bring the bacon on the side.)

IMG_3581

A Hershey’s bar grilled between bread with whipped cream and chocolate sauce

IMG_3582

The perfect size for 4

IMG_3584

I went back for more “crack bacon” – it’s a secret recipe but I’ve a feeling it’s similar to this one

IMG_3587

Glad we returned – pretty sure it can still be a nightmare during weekend brunch, but at night, it reminded me of places in Austin that we loved – not a hole-in-the-wall, nor a trendy/scene-y restaurant…

IMG_3544

…just good grub.
