Abe’s last name (Forman-Greenwald) usually elicits one of two questions:
- What’s with the hyphen?
- Is he the Sausage King of Chicago?
Which gets the following responses:
- It’s both of his parents’ last names. Yes, it’s a pain sometimes.
- He’s a vegetarian.
Last night Abe got a chance to be the Seitan King of Echo Park!!!
Mohawk Bend opened a few months ago in an old theater. Like its next door neighbor Elf, vegans love it
All the tables were booked…
…so we sat right by the kitchen bar and witnessed the separate stations firsthand

The pizza was delicious – with seitan sausage, vegan mozzarella, fennel and peppers. I gobbled up two pieces.
Gave Abe 1/3 of my JJ Kale in return
A warm salad of wilted greens seared with garlic and chili, topped with julienned jicama
Abe proclaimed it better than the M Cafe Kale. Don’t know if I’d go THAT far; it was pretty phenomenal, though.
The ultimate was dessert – a chocolate chip cookie in a cast-iron skillet
To gild the lily, we ordered it with an extra scoop of Coconut Gelato (from Pazzo)
Hot. Cold.
Gooey. Creamy.
Happy.
Although we loved the eats/atmosphere, I have to blog about the service. We didn’t personally have any problems, but our bar neighbors walked out – they were there when we sat down and their food arrived AFTER we were done with our cookie. And we were there for a while too – an hour before meeting up with friends (who reported waiter problems in the past as well).
Also, once our buddies showed up, we had some trouble flagging down someone to take drink orders, even after several requests.
But with plenty of beer to drink, nobody seemed to care.

Strange. A friend of mine was at Mohawk Bend last night too. He says that he saw George Michael, I mean Michael Cera there too.

It’s great that they have good food, but that’s too bad about the service.
I went to Mohawk Bend last week and really really enjoyed it. I really liked how the menu is marked “non vegan” rather than “vegan”. I didn’t get a pizza but they look amazing!
Funny about the service. When I was there we had fantastic, speedy service.
