Speculating Speculoos

breakfast

*Sniff*

My last Paleta day!!!

Abe and I split the breakfast – I gave him the fruit/eggs and kept the Vanilla Brown Rice Cereal + nuts for myself

A few hours later I was starving and broke into the snack (Dolmas)

Just one grape leaf to tide me over – I had a lunch date!!!

Met up with Meredith at Shaky Alibi

There’s basically one thing on the menu

I wonder if the guys who work here think, “And in the morning, I’m making waffles!”

IMG_5015.JPG

Couldn’t decide between savory or sweet, so we got both and shared!

I doused mine in Trappey’s Louisiana Hot Sauce – perfect combo of salty, sweet, and spicy!

The other half had the same chunks of caramelized pearl sugar throughout the batter, topped with fresh fruit…

…and Crunchy Speculoos!

IMG_5032.JPG

What IS Speculoos?!? Well, it’s the whole reason we came to Shaky Alibi!

I had heard an interview on a recent “Dinner Party Download” about this popular Belgian paste, a nut-free spread that is the basis of the popular Delta airline cookie known as “Biscoff.” I don’t know how to describe it. Sweet. Delicious. Someone on facebook said it “tastes like Christmas.”

Apparently there was a shortage (amongst other controversies) over Speculoos, but no worries – you can order it online or buy it at Shoop’s European Deli if you’re in Los Angeles. TJ’s makes a version of the cookie as well, if you want to make your own!

What IS the difference between catsup and ketchup?!?

Well, I was on a mission last night to find out!!!

Let the oven do all the work

IMG_4924.JPG

Threw in some Sunshine Burgers too

IMG_4925.JPG

Alexia Waffle Cut Sweet Potato Fries (found at Whole Foods in the freezer section) are wonderful – I needed an additional 10 minutes to achieve maximum crispness

Roasted broccoli (with Garlic Gold Nuggets)

Henry’s Catsup vs. Trader Joe’s Organic Ketchup – the main ingredient difference was tomato vs. tomato puree, respectively

IMG_4944.JPG

Catsup was saucier…

IMG_4955.JPG

…tastier…

IMG_4966.JPG

…we finished half the bottle. Cats win.
