Shaved Ice

August 1, 2011

in blogger meetup, dessert

Not just one, but TWO blogger dates today!

First up – the lovely Erin at Larchmont Bungalow

…then Sophia at The Yellow House Cafe

…which is exactly that:

Looks a bit out of place in the midst of Koreatown, and is equally quirky inside.

Is this grandma’s house…

IMG_3549.JPG

…a hospital gift shop…

IMG_3550.JPG

…or a relaxing hotel patio?

IMG_3552.JPG

IMG_3553.JPG

Whatever The Yellow House Cafe is, it has this:

IMG_3559.JPG

Pat Bing Soo, a.k.a. Korean Shaved Ice! I’d been reading so much about these on Sophia’s blog and was very curious….

IMG_3556.JPG

…we both ordered small Red Beans, and took lots of pictures!

IMG_3562.JPG

Aside from the sweet adzuki beans and shaved ice, there was banana, mango, strawberry, kiwi…

IMG_3570.JPG

….and a mini sundae sitting on top – vanilla ice cream, whipped cream + maraschino cherry!

IMG_3563.JPG

More randomness – Fruity Pebbles, Mochi balls, a sugar wafer cookie, sweetened condensed milk, and ground cereal powder:

IMG_3575.JPG

It melts into the most delicious dessert soup!

I can see why Sophia has been eating these weekly lately – they’re the perfect summer meal! (Yes, that was brunch.)

If you’re in the Cape Cod area, I just found out that Surrogate Valentine is playing in Woods Hole tonight. As in less than 30 minutes!!!!

That looks so funky and yummy at the same time. Leave it to Sophia to find all the cool shizzle.

I want that Sophia-sized (iced tea??), too. haha!

It was iced coffee! I had to wait until mid-day to get my coffee fix, but for Lynn, 100% worth it. :-)

GAH I want to try Korean shaved ice! It reminds me a little of one of my favorite Filipino desserts, halo halo. Looks like you’ve had a fun day!

Whoa, Lynn, you blog super fast! Tee hee, I didn’t realize I was in your shots.

I count pat bing soo more as a snack, but you’re right– the perfect summer meal because it’s got nutrients (fruits), calcium (condensed milk and ice cream), healthy carbs (mochi bits and fruity pebbles) and protein (sweet bean paste). Seriously the healthiest, most awesome summer “meal” ever! :D

i definitely don’t fact check ;)

So jealous! I loved shaved ice! You should try Shau May (sp?) shaved ice in Monterey Park. It’s a HUGE mountain of ice with condensed milk and 3 toppings I think for about 3.25 (it used to be cheaper!) :P

I am jealous. I have been wanting that since I saw it on Sophia’s blog. YUM!

12 Deb (SmoothieGirlEatsToo) August 1, 2011 at 7:09 pm

Wow, cool- I know in Japan they use Azuki beans for some of their ice creams and this looks amazing!! I can’t keep up with all your meetups!

13 livinglearningeating August 2, 2011 at 4:02 am

Wow, that looks delicious! I never got the whole shaved ice thing (I kept thinking snow-cone), but THAT I would enjoy :) And sweet beans????

14 Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine August 2, 2011 at 4:35 am

I’ve seen that stuff on Sophia’s blog a few times and am so intrigued by it…anything topped with Fruity Pebbles sounds delicious to me!!
