It Was the Best of Times, It Was the Currywurst of Times

June 21, 2011

in dessert, dinner, restaurant, snacks

I spent most of Monday shopping, packing, cleaning, and getting ready for my trip east. I can’t believe the Surrogate Valentine NYC premiere (buy tix here) is in two days!!!

Late afternoon snacks – yogurt that’s gonna go bad soon….

IMG_9298.JPG

….last time with these green grapes…

IMG_9293.JPG

…and later, my first time with the Green Menu card!

IMG_9311.JPG

You can get 10% off at Berlin Currywurst, a new (teeny tiny) place in Silver Lake…

IMG_9314.JPG

…specializing in Germany’s #1 street food

IMG_9303.JPG

First, you choose your sausage (all hormone and antiobiotic free). The meat (or tofu) gets drowned in homemade organic sauce, which you can customize by heat and flavor:

IMG_9312.JPG

I went with the Chicken, Heat Level 1, with the Flavor Special – Orange Ginger

IMG_9320.JPG

While we waited for our orders, we split an order of Fritten (organic potato fries with minced onions and jambalaya seasoning)

IMG_9324.JPG

Dipping options – mayo, ketchup and (hee hee) Inglourious Mustard

IMG_9317.JPG

We opted for all three…

IMG_9326.JPG

…though I’m really disappointed there wasn’t a special fancy German mustard, just boring Heinz packets. (Inglorious, indeed!)

IMG_9336.JPG

Most of the fries swam in the sauce, anyway…

IMG_9333.JPG

…there was plenty of it left, to sop up with the supplied homemade German bread

IMG_9330.JPG

Stole one of Abe’s Tofu Bratwurst

IMG_9332.JPG

It looks just like the meat – sure doesn’t taste the same, though, texture-wise.  He got the Garlic sauce, which (like mine) was very sweet.

IMG_9329.JPG

Thumbs up to Currywurst! I was just sad I didn’t get a chance to meet the owners like Abe had the last time he was here. Apparently they are lovely (and uber attractive, according to Sophia).

Although it’s right next door to Pazzo Gelato, we still headed to our favorite place for dessert….

IMG_9301.JPG

SCOOPS!

IMG_9340.JPG

Sample of Red Velvet gelato

IMG_9341.JPG

Also tried the Black Sesame (to continue my breakfast theme)

IMG_9344.JPG

None of the soy options were very appetizing – I tasted the Cherry Lychee but wasn’t diggin it

IMG_9343.JPG

Of course, I still ate a bite of Abe’s vegan flavors – Chocolate and Orange/Cinnamon Coffee

IMG_9349.JPG

Opted for a Kid Size of what Scoops is famous for – their Brown Bread Gelato

IMG_9351.JPG

I found a recipe for this flavor, but I don’t believe that Scoops’ version uses bread crumbs? I can only taste grape nuts, so I’ve no idea why it’s still called “Brown Bread.”

IMG_9353.JPG

So wonderful. Any night that ends there is one filled with happiness and puppy dogs.

Literally:

IMG_9338.JPG

Got nibble-y right before bed at midnight and snacked on some dried fruit…

IMG_9357.JPG

…plus a whole lotta candy. I have to go to the dentist today. (These two things are related, I’m sure.)

“inglorious mustard”- lol! That’s a pretty cool idea for a restaurant though. And I would totally go for the black sesame gelato. Sesame is one of my favorite flavors.

You look beautiful!

You make me want to move to LA just so I can find trendy ice cream shops with non-dairy flavors. Here the only non-dairy options are fruit sherbet and that’s meh so I usually just buy a pint at the store and eat it at home.

I don’t get it. Isn’t red velvet basically chocolate cake or does it actually have a different taste?

i honestly can’t tell the difference between red velvet and chocolate cake – but i think one of the ingredient differences is buttermilk?

Had currywurst for the first time in Germany last summer! This is going on my list next time I’m on the Left Coast- particularly because they have veggie options. Yay! Glad you enjoyed it! :D

Quick question- and if you’ve answered this elsewhere, I apologize for making you repeat yourself- but why frozen fruit? Emphasis on “frozen”? I had a really bad experience with frozen pineapple a few years ago that made me never want to touch the stuff again (lot like chewing on tinfoil. ech.). Is it a mouth feel thing?

honestly, i buy frozen fruit for one reason – because i’m always traveling/not home to buy the fresh stuff. it goes bad so quickly, so i buy the frozen to snack on (or freeze the fresh before it can go bad) – goes really well with hot cocoa!!!

I’m replying almost a week after your posted because your post sat starred in my google reader! Anyway, I love currywurst and German food in general! Wish we had a Berlin food specialities restaurant like that in Milwaukee. You’d think we would since we’re a mostly German city ancestrally.
