She’s My Cherry Pie

dessert

At 11am today, we arrived at Paper or Plastik. I snagged the very last muffin…

…which “forced” Abe to finally order the Sweet Lady Jane pie we’ve been eyeing for weeks:

IMG_9471.JPG

$7/slice seems like a lot for some cherries/sugar/flour/butter…

IMG_9472.JPG

…but lemme tell you…

IMG_9473.JPG

…it was worth it!

IMG_9474.JPG

I couldn’t handle “just a taste” – we had to do an even split

Mint/Chamomile/Blackberry “Balance” blend

The Cranberry Orange Rosemary muffin (from Cake Monkey) was quite scrumptious…

IMG_9483.JPG

…but it was all about this little lady…

IMG_9485.JPG

…with her perfect flaky crust…

IMG_9490.JPG

“Not only the best cherry pie, but the best pie – maybe even the best dessert – I’ve ever had?!?” – Abe

IMG_9486.JPG

And this slice wasn’t even warmed up <—(Can you imagine?!?)

IMG_9488.JPG

We may have to take a visit to Sweet Lady Jane Cafe to experience some fresh-from-the-oven action. Soon.

Remember my ballad to the Whole Food’s Chocolate Chip Pecan during Thanksgiving? Apparently there is something about good pie that makes me want to sing cheesy 80’s songs….

Winner Winner Turkey Dinner

dessert - salads - take out

Awards Season may be over, but Girl Scout Cookie Season as begun!

IMG_9351.JPG

For Oscar-watching last night, I brought over a package of Samoas and Chocolate Chip Tate’s Bake Shop Cookies from Itzy’s Kitchen’s Giveaway

IMG_9450.JPG

More food won – $100 courtesy of Mendocino Farms, from the video I posted as part of their Fan Challenge in December

IMG_9446.JPG

I used the $$$ to get takeout for the family last night

IMG_9449.JPG

You can order any of their sandwiches as salads; I got the seasonal “November to Remember” on mixed greens, instead of bread.

IMG_9445.JPG

Used 1/4 of the citrus dressing, a dollop of the Herb Aioli, and all of the Cranberry Chutney

IMG_9459.JPG

I was pretty sure I was going to freak out over this salad (I love most Thanksgiving-themed meals) but alas, I didn’t. Something about it didn’t work.

IMG_9460.JPG

Maybe it was this bread that came with?

IMG_9461.JPG

Most of their carbs are AMAZING and this just wasn’t.

IMG_9465.JPG

I’ll stick to their sandwiches next time – I still have gift certificates left over!!!

Dessert was a winner – I had 2 of each. Tate’s Cookies are crisp and buttery, and Samoas are just nostalgia/heaven in each bite.

IMG_9467.JPG

My luck didn’t carry over in the Oscar predictions but Abe scored us $50 with his picks!

IMG_9457.JPG

I was happy for everyone who won last night too, especially Melissa Leo and David Seidler (I’m inspired by late bloomers)

IMG_9456.JPG

My favorite speech was Luke Matheny, the short film winner who thanked his mom for doing craft services.

Have you won anything lately? Did you watch The Oscars last night?

Oscar Sunday

baking - lunch - snacks

Had my usual Sunday morning ritual

IMG_9418.JPG

…with the usual Sunday sampling…

IMG_9419.JPG

IMG_9420.JPG

A quick trip to the mall – look at those snowy mountain caps!!! (It HAILED yesterday during Banana 2!)

IMG_9422.JPG

We made it to the Beach House just in time for lunch with our cousins:

IMG_9435.JPG

Love these thick little corn tortillas!

IMG_9423.JPG

I combined one with some Tuna Salad from Gelson’s

IMG_9427.JPG

Couple cherry tomatoes

IMG_9428.JPG

Dried papaya and dehydrated naners

IMG_9433.JPG

Super hydrated berries

IMG_9434.JPG

And a small handful of these yummy crackers

IMG_9437.JPG

A little baking project – can you figure out what we made?

IMG_9438.JPG

If you guessed Protein Bars, you are correct!

IMG_9441.JPG

Here’s the recipe – Whole Grain Power Bars. We subbed the Soy Protein for Vanilla Whey, and the Evaporated Cane Juice for Brown Sugar but the report from the kids is that they still taste great – and very hearty.

Gotta read up on the nominees – there’s money to be won tonight! Here’s my studying view:

Sometimes being in Los Angeles on Oscar Day can be a downer (like last year) but I’m in a MUCH better mood today.  Probably because I have film festivals to be excited about, two blogs keeping me busy, and lots of good food to look forward to tonight!
