Lynn – Souping and Swapping

May 21, 2010

in coupon, drinks, product review

Yes, I know “souping” isn’t a word, but if it were, I’d imagine only one “p” wouldn’t you?

Yesterday was a pretty mellow day food-wise (I was still feeling the Gyu Kaku BBQ from Wednesday night). Fun activities, though – a voiceover audition (my favorite kind in the world – no memorization and you get to just play), a trip to the library to pick up some children’s books for a volunteer job next week, and the clothing swap Christy mentioned in her post.

As usual lately, my first meal wasn’t consumed until around noon. I really wasn’t hungry and figured some probiotics couldn’t hurt the tummy situation. This is a container of Siggi’s Non-fat Grapefruit with about 1/4 cup of Vanilla Almond Galaxy Granola:

P1140909.JPG

The yogurt was sour (from the grapefruit) – a little too tart for my taste.

Some fennel tea to further aid digestion:

P1140913.JPG

I packed an Almond Butter and Honey Bonk Breaker (my husband’s favorite flavor) for the car…

P1140511.JPG

…plus an organic gala – these were all consumed around 2:30pm, between my audition/library trips.

P1140922.JPG

And about 2.5 hours later, I had a few strawberries to tide me over until the swap.

P1140938.JPG

It has been almost a year since my last clothing swap, and I desperately needed a new wardrobe. My friend Joy offered to host this time; I brought over a bag of chips to share:

P1140933.JPG

Food Should Taste Good has some new flavors out in stores and they were kind enough to send samples. This is the cheddar one, which tasted a lot like a Dorito – except without the MSG and other nastiness – take a look at these ingredients!

P1140935.JPG

(Want to try some for yourself? There’s a $1 off coupon for anyone that signs up for their fan club.)

I tried to limit myself to a small handful so others could partake – the entire bowl was polished off pretty quickly. Here’s the swap spread:

P1140942.JPG

Joy made two soups from the Jamie Oliver 20 Minute Meals App – first I tried a ladle of the Chili Corn Chowder with some salad and rye bread…

P1140945.JPG

… followed by the Quick and Delicious Pea Soup and another piece of bread – maybe multigrain?

P1140947.JPG

Both were yummy – I don’t know which one I liked more; they were so unique.

One two-bite brownie (silly name, I consumed it with a single chomp) …

P1140948.JPG

… then it was time to get my swap on! I wound up leaving with 2 bags FULL of stuff. Here’s Julius surveying the booty back at home:

P1140954.JPG

If you’re looking for an excuse to clean out your closet and need some new threads, swaps are the way to go. Since starting them a few years ago, my clothing bills have dropped quite significantly! Plus I got some jewelry and a candle too.

Around 10:30 pm my appetite finally came back in full force. I had some Truwhip and organic cherries (both frozen) …

P1140960.JPG

… and caught up with computer work over a cup of hot chocolate made from Unsweetened Almond Breeze, 1/3 tsp. organic cocoa powder, and about 10 drops of Liquid Vanilla Stevia.

P1140962.JPG

I’ve experimented a lot this winter with my nightly cup of hot chocolate – this is going to be my go-to recipe now. All I do is microwave the Almond Milk for about 1 minute and 45 seconds on high, then add the cocoa powder and the stevia. Simple, cheaper and less chemical than a mix, and just as tasty. But now that the weather is warming up again it may be the end of my heated “nightcap.” I’ll have to find a suitable, cooling/refreshing replacement. Any suggestions?

ive had grapefruit with yogurt before and my mouth puckers up like crazy ha… not the best taste.

omg i make the same almond drink but use roasted carob powder instead of the cocoa! ITS SO GOOD! i totally make them warm weather friendly by adding ice cubes and blending it up. also with some protein powder is good too. but yea.. try having it as a smoothie maybe.. with some cinnamon too if ur feeling adventurous hehe :)

What about iced hot chocolate? Just pour the whole thing over a tall glass of ice…it’s delicious and refreshing and cools you down.

Cold beverage…

I know it’s full of bad stuffs, but for me, it’s diet pepsi all the way. It gives yellow teeth though :s

p.s: I see that you like chips, I recently tried PopChips! and they are awesome.

That’s a great idea to do a clothing swap! My sister and I have impromptu clothing swaps. Actually, I just take her old clothes. Ha. She doesn’t want anything to do with mine.

What do you think of probiotics? Any good product recommendations?

I am usually hungriest at night. I think it’s because I’m a little stressed during the days (with work and whatnot). In the evening, I relax and my tummy loosens up a bit more so my appetite comes back.

By the way, I agree that “souping” should have one ‘p’ :)

And, as far as a nighttime beverage, I always have a cold glass of chocolate soy milk :)

to be honest, i really don’t know if the probiotics make a huge difference. for me so much of it is psychological! but attune makes some really delicious chocolate bars, which would make “experimenting” a lot more fun.

That nightcap sounds delicious! I don’t think I would change that up. Have you tried the NuNaturals cocoa stevia drops? I made ice cream with it yesterday and it is soooo good and rich! I have never been to a clothing swap. Sounds like fun though!

I heard those chips taste like Dorittos! Cool, I can’t wait to get some! :)

The soup looks awesome. I love Jamie Oliver and his recipes.

Have a great weekend Lynn.

Mmm…that chili corn chowder sounds yummy.

I recently discovered a drink my friend created with aloe juice, cranberry juice, peach schnapps, and vodka. But since you don’t drink alcohol this drink is still yummy with just 3/4 of your glass full of aloe and 1/4 cranberry juice. Something refreshing on a hot summer day. Hope you have a lovely weekend Lynn.

Maybe iced Trader Joe’s sleepy time tea? It’s lovely and herbal.

How about chocolate milk? lol. I can’t believe its been almost a year since your last clothing swap. I remember it because I thought it was such an awesome idea! I wish I had friends the same size as me.

you should have your friends invite friends invite friends! the more ladies around, the more chances you’ll find something in your size. and you’d be surprised at how many people keep things in their closets that don’t fit them anymore – maybe they’ll get rid of them – i’ve been doing swaps for so many years, through the worst of my eating disorders (i wore so many different sizes) and have always found things that wound up fitting.

check out your products girl: I have never seen those cheddar chips and I am that brand’s #1 fan (well at least I thought I had been up until this point)

I really like the bonk breaker’s man on their packaging. very good advertising there

Why don’t you make the hot chocolate ahead of time, and pop it in the fridge for awhile so it’s like a frozen hot chocolate, a la the recipe from Serendipity? That’s what I sometimes do with coffee or tea if I want it cold in the morning :)

oooooh, your almond milk hot chocolate sounds good. must try! i’m thinking a good drink would be something with muddled mint and cucumber… no recipe to pass over though!

I love mixing the diet polar soda in the chocolate flavor with some skim milk (or whatever you want.) It taste like an egg cream!

Cold nightcap: I’m digging the Apple Cider flavored sparkling water from Von’s (as shown on my recent blog entry). Tastes JUST like Martinelli’s, and the bubbles fill you up. Or just make your cocoa in advance and refrigerate it…chocolate milk!!

I haven’t had a tootsie pop is so long. I drink hot chocolate and coffee year round. P thinks I’m crazy. It can be 100 degrees and I’ll be drinking away! I do love crystal light lemonade though. It does have chemicals in it, but I drink it pretty rarely. Sometimes I use it to deter my inner snack monster!

Busy but fun day for sure! Siggi’s makes a grapefruit yogurt? I so want to try this- I <3 the grapefuit! Great clothing swap- not just for the clothes, but the great eats. Soup, salad & bread makes the best meal. And great hot chocolate recipe- I can't get enough almond milks these days. I've pretty much eliminated cows milk from my diet because I love it so much!

I’ve never heard of those bonk breaker bars. I’ll have to check them out.

I haven’t made it in a while, but cold brew coffee is really good. Basically you soak the coffee grounds in cold water for hours and then filter the grounds out. The coffee is really strong, more like expresso, and you mix it 1:1 with milk.

Iced lavender tea is so good! I haven’t ever sweetened it, but I can’t see how some liquid stevia would hurt it one bit! :)

Dear Lynn,

I’m so enjoyed reading your food blog, and it usually make me hungry sometimes =)
At least, I have to make some hot cocoa drink before go to bed (almost every night)…if I don’t drink, I feel not full or can’t sleep….lol

I’m a college student from Thailand….my country always hot a whole year…It’s really hard to live without air conditioner sometimes, and there are many ways to make you cooling…I mostly use prickly heat powder (mixed with some little water) after shower put it on all body…(it’s really cool)….Also, there are some kind of pillow which made from “Buckwheat Hull”….I’m not sure how to call correctly, but here we call “Soba Pillow”—>> I think this may make your dream yummy too when you are sleep…(kidding)….This type of pillow can make your head cooling and sleep better (or maybe for some people). However, silk bed sheet is another way too… ;-)

PS. Last week my favorite movie, “saving face”, was shown on True Film Asia TV in Thailand…That was still really great!!!

xoxo + <3

a great cold drink you could put together in a jiffy is to mix some carbonated water (or regular iced water) with some lemon, honey, mint leaves, and put in a few slices of cucumber and fruits for flavoring! it’s simple and delicious!
